The Special Troops Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division was organized on 16 September 2005 from the Headquarters Company of the 2nd Brigade, 10 Mountain Division, with the Brigade’s Headquarters and staff being redesignated as HQ of the simultaneously established 2nd Brigade Combat Team.
Approved before the unit was reorganized (7 February 1005), the Special Troops Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat, 10th Mountain Division Distinctive Unit Insignia (also called a DUI or unit crest) looks to the unit’s origins as a Mountain with images of snow-covered mountains, but also points to its future with three peaks representing the primary types of units the battalion would comprise: Engineer, Signal, and Military Intelligence.
A lighting bolt is a common icon used in the heraldry of Signal units and denotes the almost instantaneous speed of modern communications. Dynamite is a common tool of Engineer units, and by forming a saltire with the lightning bolt it recalls the Roman numeral X, for the numerical designation of the parent organization. The bayonet recalls the Battalion’s association with the 2nd Brigade and the 10th Mountain Division’s combat in the Italian Alps. Keys are a symbol of the secrets unlocked by Military Intelligence. Light blue in the upper half of the chief stands for Infantry; teal in the bottom is the battalion’s branch color (branch immaterial).
The Special Troops Battalion, 2nd BCT, 10th Mountain Division was inactivated in October, 2014 and reflagged as the 41st Brigade Engineer Battalion. During its brief stint in the 2nd BCT, it earned two Meritorious Unit Commendations, and as the HQ Company of the 2nd Brigade it earned credit for participation in Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2004 – 2005, proving the seriousness with which it took its motto of “Strength And Honor.”

A Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.
Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e)
"Beret" and
"Garrison Cap," respectively.
