Nicknamed “Titan,” the Special Troops Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division was created at the same time the 2nd Brigade was transitioned to a Brigade Combat Team format; the Brigade’s Headquarters Company formed the basis of the Special Troop Battalion, leaving the HQ itself to lead the Brigade Combat Team.
The Special Troops Battalion, 2nd BCT of the 3rd Infantry Division was active for about a decade before it was reorganized as a Brigade Engineer Battalion. During that time, however, it (and/or some of its subordinate units) were the recipients of four Meritorious Unit Commendations, the first being awarded for service in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom during a 2005 – 2006 deployment. Its final MUC, issued on 3 September 2014, was for the Battalion’s service as part of the Multi-National Combined Team Uruzgan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan, epitomizing the Battalion’s commitment to teamwork found in its unit motto, “We Fight As One" emblazoned on its unit crest.
The Battalion was inactivated in 2015 as part of the Army's decision to replace Special Troops units with Brigade Engineer Battalions.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, the Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.
Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e),
"Beret" and
"Garrison Cap," respectively.
