The 2nd Military Police Group Distinctive Unit insignia pays homage to the area in which the group was stationed for much of its twenty-plus years of existence. It was originally constituted on 25 May 1964 as HQ and HQ Detachment, 2nd Military Police Group and activated on the 1st of July, leading to the inactivation of the 508th and 382nd Military Police Battalions (and some smaller units). In addition to the HQ Detachment, the Group comprised two Military Police Battalions (709th and 793rd), two MP companies, two Criminal Investigation units, a stockade detachment, and a platoon tasked with railway security. It was redesignated a HQ and HQ Company on 16 November 1981 and was inactivated on 15 August 1985.
A medieval German castle is the focal point of the unit crest of the 2nd Military Police Group, with the two towers indicating the Group’s area of responsibility, from Kassel to the North Berchtesgaden in the south (HQ for these two sections were at Turley Barracks, Mannheim and W. O. Darby Kaserne, Nuremberg, respectively). Between the two towers is a halberd, carried by Medieval guards and a reference to military police activities; the three prongs on the halberd represent command control, staff planning, and operational control. The colors green and golden-yellow are MP colors, and "Pride And Honor" was the official motto of the Group.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, the Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.
Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e)
"Beret" and
"Garrison Cap," respectively.
