The 236th Brigade Engineer Battalion is a Support unit in the North Carolina Army National Guard assigned to the 30th Armored Brigade Combat Team. It is descended from the 30th Support Group (Corps), which on 9 April 2006 was reflagged as the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, Special Troops Battalion, 30th Heavy Brigade Combat Team. Since that time, the Brigade was redesignated as an Armored Brigade Combat Team, and the Battalion was redesignated from a Special Troops Battalion to a Brigade Engineer Battalion.
Under its new designation, the Battalion is responsible for the executions of general, combat, and geospatial engineering duties to support decisive actions during operations. Its organic elements include Engineer, Military Intelligence, Signal, and CBRN (Chemical Corps) units.

The 30th Support Group Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI), or unit crest, with the unit motto "Reins Of Command" indicating the unit's relationship to the Brigade command strcuture, was redesignated for the Special Troop Battalion, 30th Armored Brigade Combat Team and then for the 236th Brigade Engineer Battalion.
The Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.
