Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been
authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.
Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

Approved on 1 December 1988, the 300th Military Intelligence Brigade Distinctive Unit Insignia features the unit motto “Excellence In Language” on scrolls positioned at the top and bottom of the insignia. It is not an idle boast—the Brigade comprises 2,000 Solders with proficiency in more than 50 foreign languages across five Battalions in a half-dozen states. The Brigade has more than 150 Soldiers in Djibouti, El Salvador, Ghana, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Malta, Mongolia, Morocco, and Thailand to assist as interpreters, translators and intelligence professionals in a variety of Joint-Chiefs-of-Staff military exercises.
In the center of the 300th Military Intelligence Brigade unit crest are a crossed quill pen and a sword superimposed on a scroll. The scroll and quill symbolizes the study and use of linguistics, while the arrow reminds us of the military aspect of the mission, particularly in areas such as covert operations.
