The 319th Field Artillery Regiment's Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI), more commonly referred to as a unit crest or DUI, was first approved on 25 July 1925 for the 319th Field Artillery Regiment, Organized Reserves. It was redesignated twice during World War II, first on 22 April 1942 for the 319th Field Artillery Battalion and then on 21 October 1942 for the 319th Glider Field Artillery Battalion. It was designated as a Regiment, the 319th Artillery Regiment, for the second time on 25 August 1958. On 1 September 1971, it was given its current (and also original) designation of 319th Field Artillery Regiment; it was amended to in January 1972 to change the motto language from French to English.
While scarlet is the official branch color for Artillery, the combination of scarlet and yellow is commonly associated with Field Artillery heraldry (yellow actually was combined with scarlet for the Artillery for a short time at the start of the 19th century). Three fleurs-de-lis on the bend (diagonal bar) represent the three campaigns in France that the Regiment fought in during World War I. In the upper right corner, an arched trio of columns is taken from the State Seal of Georgia, reflecting the Regiments origins at Camp Gordon, Georgia in 1917. "Loyalty" is the Regimental motto.
Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however. Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia."
Originally formed in 1917, the 319th Field Artillery Regiment’s units have taken part in every major conflict since that time with the exception of the Korean War, with the Regiment as a whole being awarded four Presidential Unit Citations, two during World War II and two during the Vietnam War, a conflict in which the Regiment’s units took part in fifteen of seventeen total campaigns. It’s also credited with fighting in three Armed Forces Expeditions, all three campaigns of the Persian Gulf War, and in numerous campaigns in the War on Terrorism.
As of 2021, the Regiment’s four Battalions, all of which began as Batteries in 1917, are still active. Its 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Battalions are assigned 82nd Airborne Division Division Artillery (DIVARTY) and are stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, while the 4th Battalion, part of the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, is based in Grafenwöhr, Germany.
