The Third Army Noncommissioned Officer Academy Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI), or unit crest, was approved on 15 November 1967. “Lead By Example,” the Academy’s motto and the penultimate instruction for NCOs of all ranks, forms the basis for the insignia. A gold, upward pointing chevron in the middle of the shield is a reference to the basic device used for insignia of grade by all NCOs and divides the shield into three areas.
A blue star in each of these areas not only connotes the achievement of high standards, but together serve as a reminder of the Academy’s parent command. The blue disc with red circle is a visual allusion to the Shoulder Sleeve Insignia of Third United States Army, officially designated as United States Army Central and commonly referenced as ARCENT or simply Third Army.
The Noncommissioned Officer Academy for Third Army is located at Fort Stewart. It is unique among the Army’s NCO Academies in that it is the only one to offer courses at a forward deployed base (Camp Buehring, Kuwait).

The Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.
Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia."
