A gold fleur-de-lis in a green canton (square) found on the Distinctive Unit Insignia of the Special Troops Battalion of 10th Mountain Division’s 4th Brigade Combat Team recalls the unit’s activation at Fort Polk, Louisiana on 16 January 2005; green is the color of the Military Police Corps and represents the MP platoon attached to Battalion HQ.
Referred to as “Dagger” because of the upraised knife in the middle of its insignia recalling Military Intelligence and Infantry units, the 4th Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 10th Infantry Division also comprised a Signal company, represented b the orange flash, and an Engineer company symbolized the scarlet base of the stylized mountain, which along with the pickaxe recalls the Battalion’s association with a Mountain division.
Before it was inactivated in February 2015 as part of an Army reorganization plan to replace Special Troops Battalions with Brigade Engineer Battalions, the Dagger Battalion (and/or its subordinate units) was the recipient of two Meritorious Unit Commendations, a Valorous Unit Award, and an Army Superior Unit Award, reflecting its commitment to the unit motto of “Steadfast Above All.”

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, the Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.
