U.S. ARMY 409TH CONTRACTING SUPPORT BRIGADE UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

Based at Kaiserlautern, Germany, The 409th Contracting Support Brigade has a twofold mission. First, it serves as the Principal Assistant Responsible for Contracting, providing a complete range of contracting support throughout the USAREUR (U.S. Army Europe) area of responsibility. Second, and just as importantly, the Brigade provides trained and motivated personnel ready to support USAREUR exercises, contingencies, and peacekeeping operations.

Considering it is based in Europe, the motto inscribed on the 409th Contracting Support Brigade Distinctive Unit Insignia—SEMPER PROTINUS, or “Always Forward”—is particularly fitting. The dark blue of the shield is the Acquisition Corps color and signifies the Brigade’s mission of providing contingency contracting support to a theater of operations. Gold used throughout the insignia denotes excellence and lofty ideals.

A flaming, upright sword is inspired by the insignia of U.S. Army Europe, while the globe in the upper left represents the Brigade’s ability to provide worldwide support. A polestar in the upper right recalls the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and its commitment to support U.S. European Command, with the star’s four points stand for the ability to balance regional stability, economic development, counterterrorism, and advancing U.S. interests. Two parallel bars suggest stability.
