Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been
authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.
Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.
Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e),
"Beret" and
"Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 41st Infantry Regiment was originally formed as a company of the 41st Infantry using soldiers of the 3rd Battalion, 36th Infantry Regiment. Though assigned to the 10th Division at Camp Funston in July 1918 for training before deployment to France, the collapse of German resistance at the start of November brought about the Armistice before the Regiment could embark for the journey.
During World War II, the unit was reactivated and the Regiment comprised the organic Infantry of the 2nd Armored Division, a relationship that would continue throughout the War and into the mid-1990s. For its actions during the Second World War, the Regiment received four Presidential Unit Citations for its outstanding performance while taking part in the Norman, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe campaigns. The unit also was honored with a Belgian Fouragere, cited once in the Order of the Day for its combat action in Belgum and another time for fighting in the Ardennes.
During the First Gulf War in 1991, the Regiment’s 1st Battalion served as part of Task Force 1-41 along with the 3rd Battalion, 66th Armored Regiment. In what became known as the “Whirlwind War,” the 1st Battalion took part in two historic engagements, the Battle of 73 Easting and the Battle of Norfolk, earning a Valorous Unit Award for its courage and its contribution to the two victories.
As of Summer 2023, the Regiment's 1st Battalion is assigned to the 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division and is stationed at Fort Carson, Colorado. The only other active unit in the Regiment is its 3rd Battalion, which is assigned to the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division and is stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas.
