U.S. ARMY 501ST SUPPORT BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 501st Brigade Support Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia was originally approved on 26 March 1953 when the unit was designated as the 1st Quartermaster Battalion. It was redesignated several other times the unit underwent reorganization or redesignation, including for the 501st Supply and Transport Battalion (March 1962) 501st Support Battalion (July 1987) and 501st Brigade Support Battalion (2000s).

The unit crest of the 501st Brigade Support Battalion features a shield divided by a wavy line into buff and blue halves, partially encircled by a scroll with the unit motto “Supply Mobility Service.” Buff and blue are the colors of the Quartermaster Corps and recalls the units service in that branch. A cornucopia in the shield’s upper half is a symbol of plenty and abundance, denoting the Battalion’s function as a supply and support unit. A classic architectural colum in the lower half is a reference to the unit’s service in World War II where it earned honors for taking part in four campaigns: Tunisia, Naples-Foggia, Anzio, and Rome-Arno.

As of Summer 2023, the 501st Brigade Support Battalion, nicknamed “Providers,” is assigned to the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division and is headquartered at Fort Bliss, Texas. Its military honors include a Presidential Unit Citation (Iraq, 2004), two Meritorious Unit Commendations (2009-2010, 2012-2013), and a Navy Unit Commendation (2006-2007). It was also tapped for an Army Superior Unit Award (1995-1996).
