The 505th Engineer Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia, more commonly known as a “unit crest” or DUI, was approved for wear on 22 June 1982. Scarlet and white, the two shades used exclusively on the shield portion of the insignia, are the branch colors of the Corps of Engineers. Two fleurs-de-lis commemorate the service of elements of the Battalion in Europe during both World Wars.
A triangle suggesting a chevron, traditional heraldic symbol of support, is used to divide the shield while also serving as stylized image of Kings Mountain, a landmark near the Battalion’s Headquarters. The hornet, known for its tireless building and ferocious defense, symbolizes the mission of the Engineer Soldier and organization. It is also associated closely with North Carolina and its military heritage; a hornet’s nest was used in the state’s first flag, and British General Cornwallis referred to the nearby city of Charlotte and its surrounding area as a “hornet’s nest of rebellions.” "Disciplined To Serve" is the Battalion motto.
