U.S. ARMY 528TH ENGINEER BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 528th Engineer Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia, more commonly called a unit crest or a DUI, was approved on 2 December 1977. The red pales behind the fleur-de-lis and paddle wheel are a palisade, a defense barrier or fortification that here symbolizes Monroe, Louisiana (formerly Fort Miro, established by the Spanish) on the Ouachita River, home area of the Battalion. A paddle wheel and blue background are an allusion to the James Monroe, the first steam-powered riverboard to ascend the Ouachita on this site. The fleur-de-lis denotes Louisiana’s French heritage, while black gunstone on which it rests is a reference to the organization’s function as Combat Engineers. “To The Very End” is the Battalion motto.

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

A unit in the Louisiana Army National Guard (ARNG), the 528th Engineer Battalion was constituted under that designation on 1 October 1975 in the Louisiana ARNG and was subsequently organized from existing units and Federally recognized with its Headquarters at Monroe (see above) on 1 November 1975. Because of the history of the existing units used to create the Battalion, the 528th Engineer Battalion has a World War I streamer with no inscription, typically given when a unit’s personnel was allotted as reinforcements to various other front-line units.

The Battalion was ordered into active Federal service on 1 March 2004 at home stations and was released from service on 1 May 2005, when it reverted back to state control.

As of Autumn 2023, the 528th Engineer Battalion remains an active unit in the Louisiana Army National Guard and is assigned to the 225th Engineer Brigade and is headquartered in Monroe, Louisiana.
