U.S. ARMY 555TH ENGINEER BRIGADE UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 555th Engineer Brigade has been almost solely designated as some type of Engineer unit ever since its inception as the 1103rd Engineer Combat Group in 1943. This rich tradition is celebrated in the Brigade’s Distinctive Unit Insignia, or unit crest, which was originally approved in 1992 when the unit was designated the 555th Engineer Group. Scarlet and white, colors of the Corps of Engineers, are prominent in the center of the insignia, and the blue used for the fleur-de-lis recalls the rivers the unit’s combat engineers bridged during the campaigns in France and Germany during World War II (the black eagle also recalls combat in Germany).

A pentagon in the middle of the 555th Engineer Brigade Distinctive Unit Insignia is a symbol of defense fortifications, with the embattled edges suggesting fortified positions and alluding to the Corps of Engineers branch insignia. Three pentagons can be seen in the insignia, a visual reference to the Brigade’s numerical designation. Red, white, and blue are of course our National colors, and stand for courage, integrity, and dedication to duty.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.
