U.S. ARMY 626TH BRIGADE SUPPORT BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

An eagle’s wing is the predominant feature of the 626th Support Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI), or unit crest, signifying flight and the unit’s longstanding association with Airborne organizations. The green serpent reflects its origins in the Army Medical Department, while the motto ASSURGAM is Latin for “I Rise Up,” emphasizing the unit’s Airborne history. It was originally approved on 24 November 1942 for the 326th Airborne Medical Company and was redesignated for the 626th Support Battalion on 15 April 1994.

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 626th Brigade Support Battalion traces its origins to the activation of the 326th Sanitary Train in 1918 as part of the 82nd Division. With the creation of the 101st Airborne Division, the unit was redesignated as the 326th Airborne Medical Company and took part in every campaign in which the Division fought in World War II. It would undergo several redesignations in decades following World War II, becoming the 501st Airborne Medical Battalion in August 1952, the 326th Medical Company in 1957 (expanded to a Battalion in April 1965) and finally the 62th Support Battalion in April 16 1994. Since the launch of the War on Terrorism, the Battalion has been assigned to the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, becoming a Brigade Support Battalion as part of the Army’s transformation to a modular force in 2005.

The Battalion as a whole was honored with a Valorous Unit Award for service in Afghanistan from 1 April to 30 August 2010 and a Meritorious Unit Commendation for service between October 2012 and 2013, also in Afghanistan. Two of its Companies, F and G, were awarded individual Valorous Unit Awards, and its Headquarters and Headquarters Company and Companies A, B, and C have twice earned Meritorious Unit Commendations. Additionally, two of the Companies in the Battalion (F and G) were honored with Valorous Unit Awards for extraordinary heroism, and a half dozen Meritorious Unit Commendations in all have been garnered by several other companies.

As of Autumn 2023, the Battalion is an organic element of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division and is based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
