U.S. ARMY 638TH SUPPORT BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

Now worn by personnel serving in the 638th Aviation Support Battalion, the Distinctive Unit Insignia of the 638th Support Battalion was approved on 7 June 2002. Its color combination of scarlet, blue, and white (silver) are the national colors and, when combined with the cloverleaf symbol surmounted on the wings, are symbols traditionally associated with the 38th Infantry Division, the organization to which the Battalion is assigned.

Behind the small shield which recalls Aviation heraldry are a crossed key and sword from the Quartermaster Corps insignia and the flaming torch of the Ordnance branch insignia, all indicating the supply and maintenance mission of the unit. On the viewer’s left is an eagle wing, on the right a bat wing; this denotes the day and night nature of the Battalion’s assignment and serves to reinforcement the motto of the Battalion, “Ready Day Or Night.

As of Autumn 2023, the 638th Aviation Support Battalion is a subordinate unit of the 38th Combat Aviation Brigade, 38th Infantry Division, Indiana National Guard.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
