U.S. ARMY 6TH CAVALRY REGIMENT UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Current regulations do not permit the DUI to be worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 6th Cavalry Regiment, nicknamed the “Fighting Sixth,” actually began its existence as the 3rd Cavalry Regiment when it was organized on 3 May 1861; it was only when the U.S. Army reorganized Cavalry and assigned numerical designations based upon the chronological sequence of unit creation that it became the 6th Cavalry Regiment. (Trivia note: the Regiment of Mounted Rifles received the 3rd Cavalry designation during this reorganization.)

The 6th Cavalry Regiment was active throughout the war, first seeing action in the Peninsula Campaign in the summer of July 1862 and continuing up until the very moment of Lee’s surrender at Appomattox Court House in 1865. It also took part in a large number of campaigns in the Indian Wars, as well as all the minor conflicts that popped up between the end of the Civil War and the start of World War I—the War with Spain, China Relief Expedition, Philippine-American War, and the Mexican Expedition. The Regiment as a whole earned credit for five campaigns in the European Theater of Operations during World War II, and also earned a Presidential Unit Citation for its role in clearing the Harlange Pocket in early 1945.

In the First Gulf War, the Regiment took part in all three campaigns, with its 2nd Squadron earning a Valorous Unit Award.
The Regiment’s Squadrons were deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan on numerous occasions between 2003 and 2017 and their outstanding performance was rewarded with numerous military decorations for the Squadrons and individual Troops. These include a Presidential Unit Citation (2nd Squadron), four Valorous Unit Awards (2nd and 4th Squadrons, Troop B/1st Squadron, and Troop C/4th Squadron), and a bevy of Meritorious Unit Commendations—two for 1st Squadron, three for 2nd Squadron, one apiece for the 3rd and 6th Squadrons, and three for Troop B, 2nd Squadron. It is a record that truly exemplifies the 6th Cavalry Regimental motto of DUCIT AMO PATRIAE (“Led By Love Of Country”).
