U.S. ARMY 746TH SUPPORT BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 746th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion was originally constituted 1 September 2007 in the California Army National Guard as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 746th Support Battalion. Its most recent mission, a nine-month deployment to Poland supporting all units with the U.S. Army V Corps area of operation providing direct support to Ukraine, lasted from early March to late November 2022. In all, the Battalion completed 134 Transportation and Maintenance Missions that saw personnel drive over 1 million convoy miles, deliver more than 40,000 tons of ammunition and 1.5 million gallons of fuel, carry more than 10,000 pieces of equipment and other supplies, and purify and supply over a half-million gallons of water.

The Distinctive Unit Insignia now worn by personnel in the 746th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion was originally approved for the 746th Quartermaster Battalion on 30 December 2003. It was redesignated on 1 September 2007 for the 746th Support Battalion, the date of that unit’s constitution in the California Army National Guard. It was assigned Headquarters at Van Nuys, California, location of the unit’s HQ today (as of March 2021).

The focal point of the insignia is an upright sword crossed with a key, the two being intersected by a lightning flash. Buff and light blue, colors associated with Quartermaster units, are used for the key, sword, and motto text (buff) and the background (light blue) of the shield portion of the insignia.

An upright sword denotes military readiness and capability, while the key symbolizes the unit’s mission of command and control of assigned or attached Petroleum Supply Companies and the operational services it provides to them. The lightning flash represents both the speed of the Battalion’s operations and the power it provides. A scroll serves as the base for the shield, with a black background representing Petroleum. “Fuel For The Fire,” the unit motto, is emblazoned on the scroll with gold text that denotes excellence and high achievement.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. Guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
