Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

The 82nd Personnel Services Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia was approved with an effective date of 16 January 1995. Scarlet and dark blue used throughout the insignia are the colors of the Adjutant General’s Corps; gold is employed to signify high achievement and excellence. Both the design of the wings inside the annulet and the colors red, blue, and white suggest the 82nd Airborne Division’s Shoulder Sleeve Insignia. An upright sword in the center of the insignia reinforces the notion of stout defense and military readiness. The unit motto “Support To All” clearly states the unit’s ultimate mission objective.
Originally constituted as the 82nd Personnel Service Company on 1 October 1987, the 82nd Personnel Services Battalion was given that designation when it was reorganized and redesignated on 16 January 1995. It would not carry the title very long, however. On 21 January 1997, the 82nd Solder Support Battalion (Airborne), the Army’s first Soldier Support Battalion, was established by consolidating the 82nd Personnel Services Battalion and the 82nd Finance Battalion. Although it was in existence for just a decade, the 82nd Personnel Services Battalion was on hand for one of our nation’s greatest military triumphs, serving in all three campaigns in the First Gulf War and receiving a Meritorious Unit Commendation for its exceptional performance.
