Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been
authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.
Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.
Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e),
"Beret" and
"Garrison Cap," respectively.

The coat of arms from which the Distinctive Unit Insignia of the Special Troops Battalion, 8th Army is derived was approved on 11 June 2008.
South Korea is represented by a red and blue taeguk similar to that found on the flag of the Republic of Korea, with its placement within the antique sword symbolizing the unit’s defense of freedom and preparedness to fight. Three stars at the top of the insignia represent the three years the United States fought in the Korean Conflict, while the two trigrams (three rows of black figures) derived from the Republic of Korea flag stand for the attributes of East (“Geon,” South Korea, viewer’s left) and West (“Gon,” U.S., viewer’s right). The trigrams are also a reference to the three years of the Korean war, and also refer to the three goals of the unit motto “Honor Defend Unite.”
Referred to both as Special Troops Battalion, 8th Army as well as 8th Army Special Troops Battalion-Korea, the unit is a theater-level formation that supports the United Nations Command, Republic of Korea-United States Combined Forces Command, United States Forces Korea, and Eighth (Field) Army.
