U.S. ARMY 92ND CHEMICAL BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 92nd Chemical Battalion was constituted as the 92nd Chemical Battalion, Motorized on 28 December 1943 in the Army of the United States; it was activated on 9 February 1944 in England. Reorganized and redesignated on 15 December 1944 as the 92nd Chemical Mortar Battalion, the unit would eventually take part in five campaigns in the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater before returning to the United States and subsequent inactivation on 27 October 1945.

It was redesignated in January 1949 as the 471st Chemical Mortar Battalion and allotted to the Organized Reserve (Army Reserve after 1952) but not activated. In June 1953 it was designated as the 92nd Chemical Battalion, but activation did not come until January 1982 at Pine Bluff, Arkansas when the HQ and HQ Detachment, 92nd Chemical Battalion was activated. After thirty-plus years of active service, it was inactivated in September 2005, but reactivated on 17 September 2008 in Decatur, Georgia. As of Summer 2023, the Battalion is assigned to the 415th Chemical Brigade and is still headquartered at Decatur.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Cobalt blue and golden yellow (gold) are used for the 92nd Chemical Battalion DUI to indicate it is a Chemical Corps unit. The shield portions is shaped like a benzene ring, adapted from the branch insignia of the Corps. Inside the benzene ring is a wyvern—a mythical beast that can breathe fire, smoke, and gas, thus symbolizing the mission of the Chemical Corps. A fleur-de-lis on the collar of the wyvern and the swords with a wavy pale represents the unit’s participation in World War II campaigns in France and the Rhineland. The unit motto of "Hide Behind Me" is a reference to the smokescreen capabilities of the Chemical Corps, one of the very first capabilities exercised by Chemical Corps units.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
