Also known as unit crests, Distinctive Unit Insignias (DUIs) are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been
authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.
For Enlisted personnel, the insignia is centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.
Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e),
"Beret" and
"Garrison Cap," respectively.

Although the Distinctive Unit Insignia of the 95th Training Division (Initial Entry Training) was not approved until 22 December 1966, its imagery recalls some of the Division’s finest moments while fighting in the European theater of World War II. One of those was the crossing of the Moselle River and the eventual capture and repeated defense of the town of Metz, symbolized by the blue, wavy line and black castle tower. The Division quickly earned the “Iron Men of Metz” nickname following their huge success there and decided to incorporate it into the Distinctive Unit Insignia, sometimes called a “unit crest.”
Following World War II, the Division was redesignated for training at various organizational levels. As of Winter 2024, it is allotted to the U.S. Army Reserved and tasked with training new personnel. The Division is headquartered at Fort Sill, Oklahoma and its subordinate units include four Infantry Brigades.
