U.S. ARMY 98TH TRAINING DIVISION (INITIAL ENTRY TRAINING) UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as unit crests, Distinctive Unit Insignias (DUIs) are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively

The Distinctive Unit Insignia of the 98th Training Division (Initial Entry Training) was originally approved on 5 March 1943, while the unit was designated the 98th Infantry Division. Inside an octagon divided into red and blue halves are a blank scroll and a gold Indian head in profile; the empty scroll suggests that “here upon our deeds will be written,” while the Indian head represents an Iroquois chief and thus upper New York State. Red and blue are the colors of the House of Nassau, an important family in the colonization of New Amsterdam (renamed New York after the English conquest of 1664). The octagon is found inside a nonagon; its nine sides plus the octagon’s eight sides are the numerical designation of the unit.

Since 1959, the 98th Division has been tasked with the training of new personnel under various designations—98th Division (Training), 98th Division (Institutional Training), 98th Training Division, and of course 98th Training Division (Initial Entry Training). A decade after it was deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, the Division’s Headquarters’ expertise and commitment to excellence was recognized with an Army Superior Unit Award in 2014.

As of Winter 2024, the 98th Training Division is allotted to the U.S. Army Reserve and is assigned to the 108th Training Command. The Division's four Brigades are all assigned Initial Entry Training, with almost all the Brigades' four Battalions conducting Basic Combat Training (the 321st Battalion, 2nd Brigade carries out One Station Unit Training (OSUT) for Infantry units and the 390th Battalion, 4th Brigade conducts Engineer OSUT.
