On 16 September 1997, the 972nd Signal Battalion was redesignated as 9th Signal Command, a subordinate command assigned to U.S. Army Forces Command. Five years later, the unit was redesignated as the United States Army Network Enterprise Technology Command and 9th Army Signal Command (NETCOM/9th ASC). From 2010 to 2017, the unit was a subordinate command of Second Army, but with the inactivation of Second Army it is now the operational agent for network operations and security across the entire Army. The Command serves as the single point of contact for network development and protection, and provides C4 information management in support of combatant commanders.
Prior to its designation as Network Enterprise Technology Command, the unit served in World War II as the 972nd Signal Service Battalion, where it earned credit for participation in the Central Pacific campaign and was awarded a Meritorious Unit Commendation. As the 972nd Signal Battalion, the unit took part in ten campaigns in the Vietnam War and its service was recognized with a Meritorious Unit Commendation. As of Winter 2024, the Network Enterprise Technology Command is headquartered at Fort Huachuca, Arizona and proudly serves as the "Voice Of The Army." It comprises two Signal Commands (the 7th and 311th) and their subordinate units and two Signal Brigades, the 2nd and 160th.♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦
Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignias (DUI) is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been
authorized to be issued the device. The device is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.
Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e),
"Beret" and
"Garrison Cap," respectively.
