U.S. ARMY EASTERN ARNG AVIATION TRAINING SITE UNIT CREST (DUI)

The Eastern Army National Guard (ARNG) Aviation Training Site, or Eastern AATS for short, was established in 1981 with a focus on training Army Aviation personnel for cargo and utility missions involving both fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft. Operated the Pennsylvania Army National Guard, the Eastern AATS is located at Muir Army Airfield at Fort Indiantown Gap, Pennsyvlania, with training focused on three principal aircraft: the CH-47 Chinook, the UH-60 Black Hawk, and UH-72 Lakota.

The site has two subordinate training battalions: an Aviation Training Battalion-Utility (ATB-U) and an Aviation Training Battalion-Cargo (ATB-C). Nearly 30 formal courses are offered that provide technical training and functional instruction for more than 1500 Soldiers drawn from all the U.S. States and territories and all components of the U.S. Army (active duty, Reserve, and National Guard). Additionally, the Medical Support Company assigned to ATB-C features a robust staff of aviation medicine specialists, including a flight surgeon, physician’s assistants, medical technicians, and support personnel.

For its Distinctive Unit Insignia, the Eastern AATS utilizes an eagle with spread wings and a propeller consisting of three blades and a blazing torch in place of the fourth set upon a disc in the insignia’s center. The imagery denotes the Training Site’s capability to train personnel in both fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft to encompass all Army Aviation assets, with the torch symbolizing knowledge, learning, and enlightenment. “Training For Excellence” is the organization’s motto.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, the Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia."
