U.S. ARMY INFANTRY SCHOOL UNIT CREST (DUI)

The U.S. Army Infantry School Distinctive Unit Insignia, or unit crest, was first approved for the Infantry School on 30 April 1935. On 7 August 1964 it was redesignated for the U.S. Army Infantry School, and a decade later its authorization for wear was extended to personnel assigned to the U.S. Army Infantry Center and units assigned to it. This latter authorization was rescinded on 6 November 2009.

Blue is the official color of Infantry and has long been associated with the branch. The long, narrow shape of the insignia is known as the Norman because of its resemblance to the kite-shaped shield wielded by the Normans in the 11th century. The motto, “Follow Me,” is also an order that has been repeated countless times in myriad tongues over the centuries.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap" respectively.

The United States Army Infantry School was originally designated as the School of Musketry at Monterey, California in April 1907. It was relocated to Fort Sill in Oklahoma from 1913 to 1918 when it relocated to a new site near Columbus, Georgia called Camp Benning, renamed Fort Benning in 1922 following its establishment as a permanent Infantry training institution. The addition of the Armor School in 2009 led to the creation of the Maneuver Center of Excellence at Fort Benning, with the Infantry School being one of the Center’s components. Fort Benning was redesignated as Fort Moore in October 2023 per the recommendation of the Commission on the Naming of Items of the Department of Defense that Commemorate the Confederate States of America or Any Person Who Served Voluntarily with the Confederate States of America. The new name was in honor General Hal Moore, perhaps best remembered for commanding the 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment at the Battle of Ia Drang in 1965, the first major battle for American forces in the Vietnam War.

In addition to training Infantry Soldiers from basic trainees to battalion commanders, the Infantry School maintains many Soldier training and leader development courses, including the Parachute (Airborne) Course, Officers Candidate School, Ranger Course, the Sniper Course, the Infantry Basic Officers Leadership Course, and other training, equipment testing, and doctrine development programs.
