One of the United States Armed Forces ten unified combatant commands (UCC), United States Africa Command was created in 2007 and given responsibility for U.S. military operations in every African nation with the exception of Egypt; for geopolitical reasons it was associated with the area of responsibility of the U.S. Central Command.
Prior to the establish of U.S. Africa Command, any military operations on the continent would be conducted by one of three existing UCCs: EUCOM, CENTCOM, and PACOM. Increasing acts of terrorism led to a substantial increase in funds to wager the Global War on Terrorism in Africa, primarily against Al Qaeda but also new and emerging threats. In early 2007, Secretary of Defense announced that President George W. Bush had given the Department of Defense authority to create Africa Command (AFRICOM). After being established as a sub-unified command of EUCOM but with its own headquarters, AFRICOM was eventually separated and made its own independent command on 1 October 2008.
