Casually referred to as “ACU ranks” because of its wear on the Army Combat Uniform (ACU), subdued grade cloth insignia is manufactured in a variety of ways to accommodate the methods by which it can be attached to uniform components and is worn on other utility uniforms. Please use the drop-down selector to the right to choose the type of nonsubdued cloth Captain insignia you need.
PATTERN was not an option until 1 July 2015, when the Army began issuing the ACU and other utility uniforms in a new camo scheme called the Operational Camouflage Pattern (
OCP) to eventually replace uniforms made in the original ACU camo pattern
UCP (Universal Camouflage Pattern). Be sure to choose the pattern that is used on the uniform on which this insignia will be attached; the differences in the two camouflages are quite noticeable.
STYLERank with Velcro is self-explanatory—the insignia is embroidered onto a swatch of camouflage fabric that has a hook-and-loop system on the reverse side. These insignia are attached to hook-and-loop (“Velcro”) face pads found on Utility uniforms and the Extended Cold Weather Clothing System (ECWCS) jacket. Note: these insignia are made for wear on ACUs featuring the UCP pattern, not the Operational Camouflage Pattern (OCP) that first appeared on ACUs in July 2015.
Cap Rank subdued cloth insignia is also embroidered onto a piece of pattern with the UCP, but lacks the Velcro back and consequently is sewn directly onto the Patrol Cap and the Sun Hat. Note: this selection can also be used by Soldiers wishing to exercise the option to use subdued sew-on grade insignia in lieu of Rank with Velcro insignia, but if they choose to do so they are required to also sew on their nametape and Army tape.
We use
“Gortex” as shorthand to refer to the subdued cloth rank insignia tab that slides over the tab found on front of the ECWCS parka, which the Army also refers to as the “Gore-Tex® parka.”
