Often referred to as “ACU ranks” or “ACU insignia,” subdued embroidered grade insignia with hook-and-loop fasteners were introduced for wear at the same time the Army began issuing the Army Combat Uniform, or ACU. Subdued grade insignia is also designed to be sewn on to garments or accouterments or to be attached by sliding it over a tab.

- Rank With Velcro insignia are attached to the Army Combat Uniform and other Utility uniforms using the hook-and-loop fasteners (Velcro) on the back of the insignia. (Note: Army personnel have been allowed to use sew-on insignia in lieu of Velcro-backed insignia since 2011.)
- Cap Rank insignia are sewn onto headegear (Patrol Caps, Sun Hats, helmet camouflage cover).
- GorTex insignia are double-sided with an opening at the bottom that allow the insignia to slide over a tab on the front of the parka that comes with the Extended Cold Weather Clothing System.

Pattern for your insignia that matches the pattern of the uniform or uniform component, either Universal Camouflage Pattern (
UCP) or Operational Camouflage Pattern, or
OCP. Insignia manufactured in the UCP were authorized for wear up until end of September 2019; items manufactured in OCP, on the other hand, have been authorized
since July 2015.
