Sergeant First Class subdued grade insignia is commonly referred to as “ACU rank insignia” because the Army Combat Uniform is the primary uniform invoked by the image of the camouflage pattern upon which the chevrons and rockers are embroidered. With the introduction of a second camouflage pattern for the ACU (third if you count the MultiCam ACUs used only in Afghanistan) called the "Operational Camouflage Pattern" (OCP), the Army began the process of phasing out the old ACUs manufactured with the Universal Camouflage Pattern (UCP). Be sure to choose the pattern that matches the type found on the uniform on which the insignia will be worn!
Note: UCP insignias are not authorized for wear by Soldiers currently serving in the Regular Army, Army Reserve, or National Guard.
The camouflage-patterned cloth features hook-and-loop fasteners (Velcro) that make easy to quickly attach it to (and remove it from) the Army Combat Uniform, the Army Aircrew Combat Uniform, and the Combat Vehicle Crewman uniform. Select “Rank with Velcro” in the drop-down box to the right if you’re buying rank insignia for one of those or another Utility uniform.
Subdued sew-on grade insignia is also authorized for wear with the Patrol Cap and the Sun Hat and on the camouflage cover of the Army combat helmet. Please choose “Cap Rank” if you’re purchasing a Sergeant First Class rank insignia for wear on headgear.
Lastly, subdued grade insignia is authorized for wear on the Extended Cold Weather Clothing System (ECWCS) parka, sometimes referred to eponymously as the “Gore-Tex” parka. These subdued cloth rank insignia tabs are designed specifically to fit over front tab of the parka, so be sure to choose “GorTex Loop” in the selector box when purchasing insignia for this garment.
