At The Salute Uniforms, we offer three versions of subdued cloth Staff Sergeant rank insignia tabs embroidered on the camouflage pattern with a hook-and-loop backing.
- Rank with Velcro: Worn on the hook-and-loop face pad found on the Army Combat Uniform (ACU), Maternity Work Uniform, and Army Aircrew Combat Uniform (A2CU).
- Cap Rank: Centered on the front of the Patrol Cap worn with the combat uniform in the garrison environment. (This must be sewn on.)
- Gortex: The insignia tabs are 1.5” x 2” and slip on over the ECWCS parka’s front tab.
Each of the three styles of Staff Sergeant insignia is embroidered on a swatch of fabric manufactured in one of two camouflage patterns designed to match the camo pattern of the uniform or uniform component on which it will be worn. Operational Camouflage Pattern (
OCP) was introduced in July 2015 and is the current camouflage pattern used for the Army Combat Uniform (ACU), the Army Aircrew Combat Uniform (A2CU), headgear, and outerwear. Universal Camouflage Pattern (
UCP) was introduced in 2004 and was authorized for wear until 1 October 2019.
Note: UCP insignias are
not authorized for wear by Soldiers currently serving in the Regular Army, Army Reserve, or National Guard.

The rank of Staff Sergeant was not officially established until 1920. During the Second World War, the first major conflict the United States military was involved following the creation of the rank, forty-three Staff Sergeants were awarded our nation’s highest military award: The Congressional Medal of Honor (MOH). (Note that some of these Staff Sergeants were recognized for actions they performed before being promoted to Staff Sergeant). In Vietnam, for example, almost two dozen Army Staff Sergeants were recipients of the Congressional Medal of Honor (twenty-two, to be exact).
Only four Staff Sergeants have yet been cited by Congress for the MOH for the War in Afghanistan, that number becomes more impressive when you consider that only ten members of the Army have received the MOH for Afghanistan service.
