U.S. ARMY DENTAL ACTIVITY, FORT GORDON UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Current regulations do not permit the DUI to be worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The U.S. Army Dental Activity, Fort Gordon Distinctive Unit Insignia was originally approved on 2 June 1980. Following the redesignation of the organization as U.S. Army Dental Health Activity, Fort Gordon, this insignia was cancelled with an effective date of 30 September 21016; an insignia for the newly classified unit was approved on 24 April 2017. A maroon cross with a white (silver) serpent superimposed upon it incorporates the two branch colors of the Army Medical Department. The cross is a centuries-old symbol for aid and assistance; while serpents used in Medical insignias are usually associated with knowledge or wisdom, the coiled snake here represents dental disease.

Four lightning flashes are ripe with symbolism: they allude to the use of modern dental techniques and technology in fighting dental diseases, recall the Signal Crops Training Center (now known as the U.S. Army Signal Corps Signal Schoo at the Cyber Center of Excellencel) also at Fort Gordon, and allude to the practice of “four-handed dentistry” (the hands of the dentist and the dental assistant).

Above the cross is an arch with three supporting pillars that has been taken from the Georgia State Seal, another reference to the organization’s location in Fort Gordon in the city of Augusta (Fort Gordon was redesignated as Fort Eisenhower in October 2023). “Preserve And Protect,” the unit motto, highlights two key objectives of the delivery of dental care—preservation of health gums and teeth and prophylactic efforts aimed to protect patients from acquiring dental disease in the first place.
