One of the eleven unified combatant commands of the United States Department of Defense, United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) is headquartered at Kelley Barracks, Stuttgart, Germany and is responsible for all U.S. military operations and maintaining military relations with all African nations except Egypt. Prior to its establishment, U.S. military operations and collateral missions were assigned to three Unified Combatant Commands: European, Central, and Pacific (EUCOM, CENTCOM, and PACOM, respectively).
The United States Army component of AFRICOM was United States Army Africa up until 2020, when it was replace by United States Army Southern European Task Force, Africa, known by the acronym SETAF. Note that SETAF personnel not assigned to the Army Element of AFRICOM wear the SETAF Shoulder Sleeve Insignia.
In the center of the insignia is an image of the African continent rendered in green on a field of dark blue, a color used to allude to the commitment for unity of support for the U.S. Africa Command mission evinced by the numerous African nations. The dark blue around the continent is also an obvious reference to the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, while the red border around both of them stands for liberation and the green of the land mass is the color of prosperity. The command’s area of responsibility and the continent’s fortitude in maintaining the course for solidarity and success is symbolized by the green land mass.
