The Soldier for Life lapel pin (Army regulations refer to it as a “lapel button”) is a miniature, enameled version of the new version of the U.S. Army Retired Service ID Badge (RSIB) that was introduced in 2015 as part of the Soldier for Life program that was launched by U.S. Army Chief of Staff Raymond Odierno in 2012. However, it is noticeably different in one regard: it doesn't have the word "RETIRED" inscribed at the top of insignia. Soldier for Life expanded the services available to Army personnel preparing for retirement and established new methods for veterans to not only enjoy all the benefits they deserve in return for their service, but also encourage the next generation to become Soldiers and Officers. The introduction of the “Soldier for Life” RSIB did not disestablish the existing RSIB, with retirees allowed to choose which of the two to wear at any given occasion.
Lapel pins or buttons are worn by male Army personnel on the left lapel of civilian clothing, while females wear the pins either on the left lapel or in a similar location on garments without lapels.
