Originally known as 2nd General Hospital, the U.S. Army’s Landstuhl Medical Center was founded in 1953 and became the largest U.S. military hospital outside the United States. With the collapse of the Soviet Union at the end of the 1980s and the subsequent drawdown of U.S. forces based in Europe, the Department of Defense began to shutter or downsize other U.S. military hospitals; in 1997, it was renamed Landstuhl Regional Medical Center as it became the last remaining U.S. military medical center on the continent. In 2014, the Center was reduced even further when it was reduced a Level III trauma center.
Approved on 20 September 1995 for the 2nd General Hospital, the Distinct Unit Insignia (also DUI or unit crest) of the U.S. Army Landstuhl Regional Medical Center the unit motto of “Selfless Service” in silver letters on a maroon background to reflect its ties to Army medicine. The blue and white colors employed in the design are a nod to its location (they are taken from the Landstuhl coat of arms), and the addition of a second crossbar transforms the cross normally associated with Army Medicine insignias into a hub, reflecting the Center’s role as a regional care provider.

The Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been
authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.
Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.
Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e),
"Beret" and
"Garrison Cap," respectively.
