U.S. ARMY FORT LEONARD WOOD MEDDAC UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, the Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The Distinctive Unit Insignia for the U.S. Army Medical Department Activity (MEDDAC) Fort Leonard Wood was first approved for the General Leonard Wood Army Hospital on 30 January 1970; it was given its current designation on 4 September 1973. At the center of the insignia is a five-pointed star holding a red Greek cross inside a circle; the area above the horizontal arms of the star is light blue and the areas below them are maroon. The bottom of the circle is enclosed by a crescent moon and the top by a maroon scroll inscribed with the unit motto, “Compassion And Courage” in silver letters that match the shade of the star.

Maroon and white are the branch colors of the Army’s Medical Department. The silver star is taken from the branch insignia of the Army General Staff Corps, reflecting General Leonard Wood’s status as the only medical officer to ever be named Chief of Staff of the Army. Blue is taken from the ribbon used for the Medal of Honor and is another reference to General Wood, this time the Medal of Honor he was awarded for his actions during the Apache Indian Campaign. And the crescent moons is taken from the Coat of Arms of the State of Missouri, where it is found in dexter chief (upper left).
