While Army regulations refer to pin-on Corporal chevrons as "grade insignia," the unavoidable fact of the matter is that they are rank insignia: both Corporals and Specialists are in the grade of E-4, but they certainly don’t wear the same insignia. We will, however, use the terms “insignia of grade” or “grade insignia” to reflect Army terminology and avoid confusion.
In accordance with Army regulations, we offer both nonsubdued and subdued pin-on metal insignia of grade. Anodized 22K gold-plated chevrons are used for the nonsubdued insignia, while the subdued insignia features chevrons in black enamel.
Until 2017, the only NonCommissioned Officers (NCOs) authorized to wear nonsubdued pin-on grade insignia were Hospital and Food Service personnel. In the most recent edition of DA 670-1, however, all references to Hospital personnel and uniforms have been removed, so the only Corporals authorized to wear nonsubdued pin-on grade insignia are those serving as Culinary Specialists.
Enlisted personnel wear the subdued pin-on grade insignia on the Patrol Cap and Sun Hat worn with the Army Combat Uniform (ACU) and on the liner and camouflage cover of the ACU Combat Helmet.
