We offer Sergeant First Class E-7 pin-on rank insignia in both 22K anodized gold-plated metal, or nonsubdued, and monotone black (subdued). In addition to wearing the nonsubdued version centered on the shoulder loops of the Heritage Green All-Weather Coat and Heritage Green Windbreaker, Sergeants First Class also wear them centered above the nameplate on the Garrison Culinary Smock and on the collars of the the Medical Assistant smock.
Black subdued pin-on Sergeant First Class chevrons are authorized for wear with the various uniforms that have hook-and-loop (Velcro) face pads for attaching
embroidered subdued grade insignia (see "ACU Rank" below). On Utility uniforms, the Sergeant First Class rank insignia is centered on the hook-and-loop face pad; on the Extended Cold Weather Clothing system jacket (ECWCS), the insignia is either centered on the face pad or the front tab. The subdued pin-on insignia is also authorized for wear on the camouflage cover and the liner of the Army combat helmet and is worn centered on the front of the Patrol Cap and Sun Hat.
The Department of the Army first authorized the use of subdued metal insignia in DA Message
292128Z released in December 1967.
