Approved by The Institute of Heraldry, the Ranger Challenge Tab is the sole individual qualification that is awarded only to cadets in the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) or Junior ROTC. The Challenge is referred to as the “Army ROTC varsity sport” and is open to any Cadet who wishes to participate. Teams are formed early in the semester and practice is held before 8AM almost every morning of the week.
Events include Day Orienteering, Night Orienteering, Written Land Navigation Test, M-16 Assembly and Disassembly, Grenade Assault Course, Basic Rifle Marksmanship, Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT), and a Mystery Event. Teams are presented these events in a random order over a two-day period, with the sole exception being that the APFT is always held on the second day (it is also the only event featuring individual awards).
