U.S. ARMY RECRUITING COMMAND UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Current regulations do not permit the DUI to be worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

United States Army Recruiting Command is divided into five geographically based Recruiting Brigades and one Medical Recruiting Brigade headquartered at Fort Knox, Kentucky. Each Recruiting Brigade commands a number of Recruiting Battalions stationed throughout its region; the Medical Recruiting Brigade has five Recruiting Battalions assigned to geographic areas that roughly mimic those of the non-Medical Recruiting Brigades.

“Provide The Strength,” the motto of the United States Army Recruiting Command, is the centerpiece of the USAREC Distinctive Unit Insignia. The inscription is founded on a bronze liberty bell that surmounts a tricolor scroll in the national colors of red, white, and blue; the scroll is bordered on the left and right by vertical silver quills with nibs pointing down. All these components are enclosed by a silver wreath consisting of olive to the right and laurel to the left.

Much of the symbolism in the USAREC Distinctive Unit Insignia is obvious: the ringing of the Liberty Bell was essentially a call to join the cause, while the national colors symbolize patriotic fervor. The scroll recalls the appearance of a muster roll in the Armed Forces, while the quills serve as symbols of the command’s functions. Laurel, of course, is always an emblem of victory in heraldry, while olive branches have stood for peace for centuries.
