Over the years, the United States Army has introduced and then subsequently withdrawn certain tabs for wear on both service and combat when restructuring or reorganization made them inaccurate or simply. An AIR ASSAULT tab was temporarily authorized in the early 1960s, for instance, but withdrawn when the Air Assault concept fizzled out, and a PERSHING tab that was worn by personnel assigned to Pershing missile systems was discontinued in 1991.
The SNIPER tab, however, never received Department of the Army authorization for service-wide for wear. This does not, however, mean that its wear wasn’t authorized (maybe “permitted”is a better term) by some local commanders, although this appears to have been far more common before the Global War on Terror. The main takeaway is that the SNIPER tab is not authorized for wear with any of the officially recognized permanent tabs such as SPECIAL FORCES, RANGER, or SAPPER.
