Guidance on the wear of Army utility uniforms by U.S. civilian personnel, including Department of the Army Civilians, is delineated in the
January 2021 edition of AR 670-1. When wearing a utility uniform, Civilians wear a subdued insignia consisting of a black equilateral triangle with embroidered letters “U.S.” measuring a quarter-inch in width and a half-inch in height and printed on a camouflage-pattern cloth background measuring three inches long and two-and-a-half inches wide.
The Army has established specific insignia for some of these civilian assignments, including Logistics Specialist, which have the assignment name displayed on the background cloth. On the jackets of the Army Combat Uniform and the Extended Cold Weather Clothing System (ECWCS), the insignia is worn in the same manner than U.S. Army personnel wear their insignia of rank, namely on a hook-and-loop fastener.
For other uniforms, it is worn centered directly over the left pocket or on the Utility uniform’s left sleeve and is similarly placed on outer garments. The insignia is also prescribed for wear on the front of the Patrol Cap or headgear.
The type and number of Civilian assignment designations for which the Army has created a specific insignia changes over time. In 2017, nine designated insignias were available: Scientific Consultant, Operations Analyst, War Correspondent, Technical Observer, Ordnance Technician, Chauffeur, Messenger, Logistics Specialist, and Safety. The 2021 edition of DA PAM 670-1 saw the addition of two more Civilian designations: Ammunition Surveillance and Expeditionary Workforce.
