CALIFORNIA ARMY NATIONAL GUARD ELEMENT, JOINT FORCE HQ UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Current regulations do not permit the DUI to be worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The grizzly bear has been inextricably associated with California and its heraldry ever since the establishment of the ephemeral California Republic, which used the image of a red bear on a white background for its banner in 1846. For the Distinctive Unit Insignia of the California Army National Guard Element, Joint Force Headquarters, the image of the grizzly has been placed in front of a setting son, recalling the state’s nickname as the “Sunset State,” with the 13 rays emanating from it presumably a reference to the original 13 states of the Union.  The twisted wreath below the bear is cast in the colors of Spain, red and yellow, to denote the Spanish origins of the area’s non-indigenous settlers.

Originally approved for the California National Guard’s State Staff and State Detachment on 25 January 1936, the insignia was reassigned for the HQ and HQ Detachment and non-color bearing units of the California Army National Guard (ARNG) on 22 January 1969. It was redesignated again on 30 December 1983 for the HQ, State Area Command of the California ARNG on 30 December 1983. On 1 October 2003, the insignia was given its current designation for the state’s ARNG Element, Joint Force HQ.

The Joint Force Headquarters of the California National Guard are located in Sacramento, California.
