The U.S. Army Chaplain Center and School was approved on 9 February 2018 and its first session was launched less than a month later on 3 March 1918…and a patch identifying staff and professors was approved less than seventy-five years later.
It’s unclear why there was such a delay, but a review of the insignia makes it clear that it was not because of the overly complicated or opaque imagery chosen for Army Chaplain Center and School Shoulder Sleeve Insignia. Shaped like an elongated diamond, the color version of the patch features a black border and background, golden torch and rays of light, and white text for a holy book.
Black is the branch color of the Chaplain Corps; gold denotes excellence; and white is the color of purity. The shining torch symbolizes both knowledge and leadership, while the open book is the sacred word, the divine knowledge and wisdom of religion. Ten rays streaming from the book suggest spiritual enlightenment.
