USAF CHIEF MASTER SERGEANT OF THE AIR FORCE CHEVRONS

The Chief Master of the Air Force chevrons have undergone two major revisions since they were introduced with the establishment of the position in 1967. Originally, the position was denoted by adding an encircling laurel wreath around the Air Force star in the bottom half of the Chief Master Sergeant rank chevrons, which at the time had only two upward-pointing chevrons at the top. In 1991 the insignia was modified along with all other Senior Noncommissioned Officer rank chevrons by removing a “rocker” from the bottom and adding an upward-pointing chevron at the top.

It was in 2004 that insignia underwent a significant alteration designed to bring it more in line with the rank insignia worn by the top Senior Enlisted Advisers in other branches (Sergeant Major of the Army, Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy, etc.). In the previously empty blue field in the center, the Great Seal of the United States was placed with a white star flanking each side. Chief Master Sergeant Gerald R. Murray was the first to wear the new insignia after its November 2004 authorization.
