Created in April 2006 from the disestablished Office of Security Cooperation–Afghanistan, the Combined Security Transition Command–Afghanistan was tasked with developing, programming, and implementing training programs designed to reform the Afghan Security Forces.
Its ultimate goal was to elevate the reach and effectiveness of the two components of the Afghan Security Forces—the Afghan National Army and the Afghan National Police—to ensure the development of a stable Afghanistan by strengthening the rule of law and deterring, defeating, and eventually eliminating terrorism within its borders.
The Command was headquartered at Camp Eggers in Kabul and was commanded by a two-star or three-star Army General who was dual-hatted as the Commander of the NATO Training Mission-Afghanistan. At the time the Department of Defense closed down the Command in June 2021, it was commanded by Lieutenant General E. John Deedrick.
