An eagle with spread wings, symbolically looking to the future by facing right and mounted with a red “A” upon its breast, is the insignia for four Coast Guard Auxiliary leadership and management positions appointed at the organization’s National level: Deputy Assistant National Commodore (ANACOd), Director (DIR), Senior Fellow, and National Commodore Administrative Assistant.
Directors are appointed by the National Commodore to administer Auxiliary National Programs, while Administrative Assistants are also appointed by the NACO to aid in meeting the unique position demands incumbent on that position. Neither Senior Fellows nor Deputy Assistant National Commodores (ANACOd) are mentioned in the most recent complete Auxiliary manual (COMDTINST M16790.1G, August 2011) or the New Member Reference Guide (2013).
These coat devices are worn on the epaulettes found on the Windbreaker, Trench Coat, and Raincoat. They are positioned on the epaulettes so the eagle is facing to the front and the bottom of the device is three-quarters of an inch from the shoulder-end of the epaulette.
