When wearing outerwear garments, Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla Commanders display their insignia on epaulettes, centered between the front and back edges of the epaulette with the “A” facing outboard and the outer edge of the insignia three-quarters of an inch from the epaulette’s shoulder seam. Approved garments include the Trench Coat, Windbreaker, and Raincoat; insignia was worn on Overcoats until they were discontinued on 31 December 2012.
Flotilla Commanders are elected to a term of one year by their fellow Flotilla members; the status as elected rather than appointed officials is reflected by the blue "B" on their insignia. An Auxiliarist may serve no more than two consecutive terms as a Flotilla Commander, but there is no limit on the number of times serving two consecutive terms provided each subsequent pair is preceded by at least one term out of office.
