For collar devices worn on the Operational Dress Uniform, the Coast Guard Auxiliary wisely mandates sew-on embroidered insignia as a safety precaution, eliminating the possibility of a pin-on metal insignia falling into machinery or other equipment with potentially hazardous results. It also gives Auxiliarists the option of replacing pin-on insignia with a sew-on embroidered version on the Jump suit.
Sew-on embroidered collar devices are usually positioned so the base of the insignia is 1-1/8 inches from the collar point, but the horizontal format of the insignia worn by District Chiefs of Staff (DCOS), District Captains (DCAPT), and their corresponding appointed staff officers (ANACOd, DIR, N-A, Senior Fellow) requires it be to moved up a bit on the collar so the base is 1-1/2 inches from the point. (Note: this distance is from the base of the insignia, not the patch upon which it is embroidered.) The insignia is centered on an imaginary line that equilaterally bisects the collar point (i.e., the line is also bisecting the eagle) with the eagle’s head facing inboard.
Velcro versions of the DCOS/DCAPT collar devices are offered by some vendors, but you should check with your local commander before opting for that style. Additionally, the styles of the collar and cap devices must match.
