Featuring a Coast Guard Auxiliary shield and the letter “A” embroidered in silver thread on a square of black fabric, this device is worn on the sleeves of Dinner Dress Blue Jacket worn by standard Auxiliary members as well Commanders, Vice Commanders, Captains, and other Elected Auxiliary Leaders all the way up to the position of District Commodore.
The silver “A,” which also appears on pin-on metal “rank” insignia similar to those used in the Coast Guard and Navy, indicates status as an elected Official; there is no rank per se in the Auxiliary because it is an all-volunteer, non-military organization. Conversely, a red “A” reflects the wearer’s status as someone appointed to an office or position by a Elected Auxiliary official.
